Quick Overview

Compiled by Hannah Hurd

This 52 page publication is a companion edition to our Thank You booklet. It comprises a compilation of Bapak's explanations of the core meaning of Subud.

“Reading these excerpts is a revelation. For years these “three little words” were a vague notion. If someone asked me what they meant, I’d get it all wrong. I’d fumble on one or the other or al. Looking back it wasn’t beyond me. I just didn’t want to bother. ‘I’ll get it one day’ or “I really don’t want to know.’ Now reading these definitions in all their variety and richness, I missed out. I’m beginning to learn, maybe, what this all means. To me and to us. All of us who are ‘Subud.’ The selections are masterful. They flow from one to the other like a sparkling stream. Each one disappearing one or another of my wandering fantasies, as Bapak did every time he spoke. I need to be reminded”.

I have become very aware, whilst proof reading the volumes of Bapak’s Talks for SPI, of just how often Bapak explained the meaning of Susila Budhi Dharma, and its acronym ‘Subud’. As I read in more depth, the realisation has come that none of the explanations are exactly the same. Bapak seemed to give different slants on the meaning, with different aspects being emphasized at different times and in different situations. The explanations are like facets gradually revealing a more subtle and complete picture, so they can be a valuable basis for anyone who might want to know or be reminded about the ‘core’ meaning of Subud and Susila Budhi and Dharma.

I have tried to include a varied selection that would not be overwhelmingly long, also including quotes about the Subud symbol – as together with the explanations about Susila Budhi and Dharma they help to make a more complete picture of Subud.

The extracts included in this book are taken straight from the talks with no extra editing, so they are what Bapak said [in translation] at the time. They are necessarily put together from my perspective, so please bear this in mind; but I have really tried to give a balanced selection.

If you would like to read any of these extracts in context with a whole talk etc, you can refer to the index included. You will find them, plus many more, in the newly translated Bapak’s Talks Volumes 1-16.
